Bar Y North Residence

Located on a steep slope facing the Teton range, this 4,400 square foot residence is shaped and positioned to minimize disturbance to the natural landscape while maximizing the visual connection to the mountains.

The garage and a circulation corridor are arranged to retain the uphill landmass, while the primary living space reaches toward the view. This creates a single floor, L-shaped plan with the master suite located below as a singular ‘box’ that supports the primary wing.

The entrance sequence begins with arrival at a parking court, an independent landform retained on two sides, and continues over a pedestrian bridge that connects to the front door.

This bridge creates a space between the house and the parking court, allowing the natural landscape to flow under the living space and around the master bedroom. This strategy achieves the desire for the house to have a light footprint, so the native landscape can be restored as much as possible to its original character.

Entering from the bridge, the main living space has ceiling to floor windows along the west and north to capture the mountain views. The east boundary is a functional ‘thick’ zone, containing a fireplace, bookshelves, storage and built-in furniture with windows above for eastern daylight.

The sequence of spaces - kitchen, dining and living - opens to an outdoor terrace and is interrupted by the stair descending to the master and outdoor space below.

The other wing of the ‘L’ accesses secondary bedrooms with transom glass to borrow daylight from high windows in the hallway which leads to the garage.

The interior features a wood ceiling, polished concrete floors, and white sheetrock walls. Exterior materials are a combination of dark stained cedar and board-formed concrete. The process of integrating site and program, form and space, and material and landscape resulted in a residence that connects interior environment with nature and external architecture that blends seamlessly with the natural environment.
